![]() ![]() ![]() FRUSTRATIONS AND DESIRES
![]() Well, friends, this might be the part of the site you hate.
Or, maybe you hate the whole thing already...
![]() I'm going to go against the grain, and itemize a few things about the show I did NOT like, and hope I don't see in any new project.
Don't jump all over me. I think critical discussion is important, and I'm not looking for perfection -- no TV show or movie is perfect, after all.
HERE GOES:
1. NO DROIDS OF ANY KIND
Yeah, Muffit was annoying, but that's not my only reason for saying this. Droids have been done to death in any number of sci-fi epics. We don't need 'em. Do I have to bring up Hector & Vector? Nuff said.
2. NO KIDS
Don't get me wrong: I have nothing against children, I know they have their place in TV land. What I object to is the insertion of kids where there is no legitimate plot reason for them to be there, where the producers are pandering to demographics. When I was 10, I didn't watch this show for Boxey, I watched it for the action and the dashing heroes. Boxey was a waste of screen time, as far as I was concerned.
3. NO WHINY FEMALE WARRIORS
I don't mean to bash Sheba. The script really wasn't her fault, but she drove me nuts.
4. NO WOMEN USED MERELY AS SET DECORATION
Let's try and move the male/female dynamic into the 30th century, shall we?
5. NO CLUNKY GALACTICAN WORDS
I am not a purist, in terms of BSG. Some of the terminology was laughable, and the other problem was it wasn't even consistent. Years/yahrens, minutes/centons, it just didn't seem to matter what the actors said.
![]() THOSE ARE THE BIG COMPLAINTS. BUT HERE'S A FEW THINGS I'D LIKE TO SEE:
1. MORE BACKGROUND ABOUT THE CYLONS
I learned more about the Cylons from the books than the show. An interesting, well-developed enemy would raise the caliber of the show. The Star Trek people knew that (sorry, don't mean to bring them up, but they did so many things well.)
2. MORE BACKGROUND ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
I always felt there was a great absence in terms of info about the Colonies and the people. Sure, we knew Starbuck was an orphan, Apollo was a Caprican, Cassie was a hooker, etc, etc, but what did it all mean?
3. BRING BACK COUNT IBLIS
Sorry, personal preference. War of the Gods is my favourite episode, and left more questions than answers.
4. MORE POLITICAL CONFLICT
RH touched on this a bit with his first book, but I always thought there was a wasted opportunity with the Council, especially after that great set-up with Apollo and Sire Uri in the movie. Behind-the-scenes power struggles can add much depth to a story-line. Look at Babylon 5...
5. MUTINY
I'm just intensely curious about this unfilmed 2nd season episode. And it's entirely believable that unrest could rise and destabilize the Fleet at any moment, especially if there's an inhabitable planet nearby. It'd be a good show, I think. (I was always looking for that to happen on Voyager, actually, but everybody always gets along in the Star Trek universe....)
6. AN ALERT CONTINUITY EDITOR
Please, please, please.... too many foolish errors in continuity.
THAT COVERS THE MAIN POINTS.
That said: The trailer certainly seems to address some of these issues. I know a 5 minute overview is a long way from a series or movie, but I'm hopeful about the potential of BSG. I truly believe it could have been a great show. I truly believe it still could be.
